Getting to the Core

At Success, middle school is where we really double down on setting your child up for their future. That means a curriculum that prepares them to take Regent and AP exams as early as 8th grade, so they can jump directly into advanced courses in high school, and eventually test out of classes in college. Simultaneously they’ll have access to a variety of programs that provide outlets for creativity and self-expression while boosting their self-awareness, confidence, and independence.

A Holistic Education

Becoming Mindful

Middle schoolers become more self-aware while both enjoying positive relationships and working through social conflict. Social Emotional Learning specialists lead kids through emotional wellness initiatives school-wide, in small groups, and one-on-one.

Literature

Scholars analyze literary structure and style while studying compelling works of fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction from around the world. Through discussion, debate, and written responses, they don’t just understand the deeper meanings of what they’re reading — they see why it’s important.

Writing

As growing writers, students learn how to express their ideas clearly and powerfully with proper organization and grammar. This work helps them interpret everything they read and strengthens their ability to craft a convincing narrative or argument. You’ll see this pay off quickly, not only because they’ll become better test takers, but also better communicators in life.

History

We don’t approach history as a checklist of facts and figures. We help students investigate the ideas and movements that have shaped our history, interpreting why they still matter today. This focus on world history allows scholars to build the key writing and analytical skills needed to understand our modern world and the history behind it.

Science

Building on the technical skills they developed in elementary school, students experience the joy of discovery through science—Earth and space science, biology, chemistry, and physics. Our teachers are obsessed with sparking curiosity and inspiring students to better observe the world around them. By encouraging students to ask more questions, we promote the growth of independence and leadership.

Symposium

The Symposium is our fresh take on an academic fair. For one month each year, all middle school students complete independent science- and humanities-themed projects, designing and executing experiments to answer a question that intrigues them. After using scientific tools to find the answer, they present their findings at an all-school event.

Double Math

Through two blocks of Math, students become more confident thinkers and productive problem solvers. In Math Principles, they work to understand complex concepts. In Problem Solving, they put those concepts to work, using math to explore real world challenges and become creative problem solvers.

Basketball and Soccer

Students develop coordination, strategy, and teamwork skills on our basketball and soccer teams open to all students. Our basketball teams compete within the Amateur Athletics Union (AAU), giving them the opportunity to represent Success Academy in regional and national tournaments. On soccer teams, students receive personalized, club style training and compete in leagues and tournaments. These teams are open to all students, but we offer elite competitive opportunities for those looking to play at the next level.

Chess

Top chess players can participate in our selective chess program, where they receive additional instruction and compete in regional and national tournaments. Guided by coaches who are committed to their continual growth, students learn to think critically, control their impulses, make decisions, and compete with confidence.

Dance

From learning grooves to practicing discipline and stage etiquette, dance gives students structured time to take movement and self-expression to the next level. Their work builds to performances and conferences for students who show interest and expertise.

Debate

Debate helps our students develop as active and engaged citizens both in school and in their community, testing their skills in local, regional, and national tournaments. By driving their own learning, students practice active listening, insightful speaking, and in-depth research techniques as they take on topics such as education and immigration reform, voter fraud, global warming, and criminal justice.

Visual Arts

Here, students get the chance to experiment in various mediums, including clay, collage, construction, photography, painting, printmaking, and textiles. These experiences provide the technical skills and confidence to express themselves visually while improving their ability to solve problems. Through study of great artists and artistic movements, they’ll understand the impact of art on the world.

Independence

For middle schoolers, confidence is key. Our students develop actionable plans to achieve goals, feeling more self-assured, independent, and ready to lead.
